Welcome Avatar ! Today we will be diving deep into DAO’s because I know they hold the future to Gaming, specifically how communities function, split profits, gather & work together.
Let’s dial into the critical points.
What is a DAO ? By resident @BowTiedPickle
A DAO is a Decentralized Autonomous Organization. In plain language, that means an internet organization that is run by its members. They each have a say in how it runs, how its money is spent, and how it's structured.
Organizing a community is difficult enough without giving so much power to the users, so it's helpful to structure the organization with very concrete rules. These rules can be enforced by a smart contract. A smart contract is just a piece of code running on a blockchain. It can't be changed, can't be bribed, and does exactly what it says it will.
A smart contract ensures that everything in the DAO happens out in the open, and helps prevent political infighting. Governance has to happen the way the contract says it has to.
Beyond running an organization, smart contracts let you do other cool things. They're great at trustlessly handling money. You don't need to trust a treasurer to hold everything, and you don't need a bank account.
And, crucially to gaming, smart contracts can let you share in the game's success.
Often in a Roblox world you can earn points as you play. You can spend these points to get officer ranks, buy items within that world, etc. But, you can't take those outside of Roblox.
Now imagine a world where you earn points as you play - but those points are also tokens on a blockchain. Those tokens let you vote in the world's DAO. If you're really good, or play the game a lot, you get more of a say in how the world is run - which makes sense, since you're one of its top users.
Those items, battle passes, game passes and officer ranks can be represented as NFTs (Non Fungible Tokens, think unique items or Limiteds). NFT integrations can automatically grant the holder access to Discord ranks, you can sell your items to friends, send them to your other accounts, whatever you want to do.
If the game becomes more popular, your OG Season 1 items become more valuable. This exists now with Limiteds, but again you're restricted to Roblox. NFTs have no such restriction - they are portable to other worlds or platforms that choose to integrate them.
NFTs and tokens sometimes get a bad rap because they get associated with microtransactions - which we all hate. A good implementation of NFTs and tokens rewards you for playing the game and lets you share in its success.
Unfortunately, we're not there yet with some of the tooling to make this vision a reality. Roblox doesn't have blockchain integration yet, and for now there will have to be workarounds or duct tape fixes to integrate the two. But it's likely to come in the future.
“Roblox recently hired someone in the Web 3 space and it seems they are aiming to integrate NFT’s soon, we’ll dive deep into the potential scenarios that can happen here in another post” - arcticfox
Next time you play a game, think about what it would look like to share in that game's success.
